ELF Matte Lipsticks Swatches, Pictures, Review (Studio Line)

ELF or Eyes Lips Face has released a new line of matte lipsticks. These can be found in the studio collection for $3 and come in four shades: Coral, Natural, Tea Rose and Praline.

These are in large sized lip liner packaging, but  are bigger than a normal lip liner. I would have preferred these to be in normal lipstick tubes, but they are cute this way. Of course, being in a lip liner package, it makes the lipsticks very unsteady in the tube and it movea around quite a lot, so my lipsticks had dents in them before I even used them. You have to be really delicate with these or they will break and hit the side of the packaging. I don't think these are really a matte texture because they have a a little bit of a shine to them. I'd place them between a normal creme and matte finish... maybe somewhat satin. They don't have any shimmer to them, which is what I prefer in a lipstick.

One thing you need to consider about these is the amount of product you are getting. These have much less product in them than a normal tube of lipstick would have. Most lipsticks have around .13oz or 3.8 grams(which is the size of the elf mineral lipsticks), give or take a little depending on the brand. These only have .06 oz or 1.8 grams. So your getting less than half of a normal lipstick.

As far as color choice, the colors are all somewhat similar. You have Coral (medium coral shade), Natural (a neutral medium pink), Tea Rose (another neutral medium pink with slight brown undertones that is just a tad darker than Natural), and Praline (a darker pink with brown undertones). I think the color selection would be my biggest complaint. Why make a new line of lipsticks and have all the shades be almost exactly the same, especially by the time you put them on the lips? You can see slight differences on my hand swatches, but on the lips, not much difference at all.

One plus about these is they aren't drying like most matte lipsticks (although, like i said, these aren't completely matte). They feel really creamy on my lips, which is nice, but they don't last very long at all. After a couple hours they are pretty much gone from my lips. However, for the price, they are really nice. They just need a better selection of shades.  (edit: Jan2012, they have added a couple new shades, yay!)

Overall, these are decent. I like the product, but would like different shade selections and would rather have a normal lipstick tube. However, the lip liner shape does give you more precise, but slower, application. You can give these a try if you like creme finish lipsticks with no shimmer, but I'd only pick up one or two of the colors. Natural and Tea Rose are virtually the same, so pick one from the two of those and then I'd say go for coral as your next choice.

My review may seem a little negative, but I do really like these lipsticks. The texture is good, the price is great. Just not a huge fan of the liner-like packaging and the color selection.
